going from the board of OpenAI due to potential conflicts of interest with his involvement in Tesla and Space X. Despite Musk's departure, OpenAI continued to make advancements in artificial intelligence research. In 2019, they received a major investment of $1 billion from Microsoft and a further investment of $10 billion in 2023.

OpenAI was founded in 2015 by a group of individuals including Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Durk Kingma, Jessica Livingston, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata, and Wojciech Zaremba. Sam Altman and Elon Musk initially served as board members. The organization consists of two entities, the non-profit OpenAI, Inc. registered in Delaware and the for-profit subsidiary corporation OpenAI Global, LLC.

OpenAI's primary focus is on researching artificial intelligence with the goal of developing "safe and beneficial" artificial general intelligence. They define this as highly autonomous systems that can outperform humans in economically valuable work. The organization is headquartered in the Pioneer Building in the Mission District of San Francisco.

In its early years, OpenAI received significant financial support from various entities. In December2015, several individuals and organizations, including Amazon Web Services, Infosys, and YC Research, pledged over $1 billion to the venture. However, the actual amount collected by2019 was only130 million.

OpenAI made notable achievements in the field of artificial intelligence. In December2016, they released "Universe," a software platform that allowed for the measurement and training of an AI's general intelligence by utilizing various games, websites, and applications. They also invested heavily in cloud computing, spending $7.9 million in2017 alone.

Despite their progress, OpenAI faced challenges in their research. Training Dota2 bots, for example, required renting a significant number of CPUs and GPUs from Google for several weeks in2018. Additionally, Elon Musk resigned from the board in the same year due to potential conflicts of interest with his other ventures.

However, OpenAI's work continued to gather significant attention and support. In2019, they received a $1 billion investment from Microsoft, followed by a $10 billion investment in2023. These investments have helped OpenAI further advance their research and pursue their goal of developing safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence.

GPT-3 was specifically designed to answer questions using natural language, but it also showcased the ability to translate between languages and generate coherent text. OpenAI also revealed plans for their first commercial product centered around an API called "the API."

The following year, in 2021, OpenAI launched DALL-E, an advanced deep-learning model that can generate digital images based on written descriptions. This model represents another major milestone in their efforts to push the boundaries of AI.

In December 2022, OpenAI generated significant media attention by releasing a free preview of their new AI chatbot called ChatGPT, which is based on an improved version of GPT-3. The preview attracted an astounding one million sign-ups within the initial five days.

According to sources speaking anonymously to Reuters, OpenAI Global LLC projected revenue of $200 million in 2023 and $1 billion in 2024. These figures suggest a prosperous future for the organization.
